Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators
Volcano’s 2022 deadline for Recommender applications is january 9th, 2023.
Volcano is thrilled to yet again be one of the companies participating in the Ontario Art Council’s Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators program.
The OAC Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators assists theatre creators to develop new work. Using Nova, OAC’s online grant application system, theatre creators apply to theatre companies designated as recommenders for the program (a maximum of five applications per year). These recommenders assess applications and submit grant recommendations to OAC.
Our Priorities
We will prioritize projects that combine disciplines, and/or bridge cultures and theatrical traditions, and/or are politically or intellectually provocative. We’re likely looking for work that reinvents the theatrical experiment, in some way – maybe even just a little, maybe profoundly. But we aren’t sticklers, and we often may make exceptions to our own rules…
Our hope is to solicit submissions that provide audiences with something beyond knowledge – perhaps an experience or feeling that the audience’s presence is somehow consequential – maybe to the show, or maybe to our collective lives on this planet. We are very interested in WHY a project is necessary, especially right now. In a bleak time, we encourage you to dream your best dreams for a better way forward.
To all prospective applicants: Volcano gets to recommend only $11K of funds, and we are usually overwhelmed with quality applicants. The decisions are made collaboratively by Volcano’s artistic director and associate artists. We need to let the OAC know our decisions by Feb 20, 2023. Our maximum allowable grant is $3K. Our smallest allowable grant is $1K. We won’t get it right. We’ll try to.
As always, there is nowhere near enough money to fund all of the vision. So no matter what the result is here, if you can, keep going. We wish you the best.

Complete and submit an application in Nova, OAC’s online grant application system. Before applying, you must create or update your profile in Nova.
What’s New
The number of applications that an applicant may submit in a program year is now capped at five.
In 2020, Volcano introduced a new assessment process to evaluate each of the submissions. Assessments will be done by a group of Volcano’s Associate Artists working in tandem with Volcano’s artistic director team: Ross Manson and Abigail Whitney.

Professional theatre artists who are residents of Ontario with a permanent physical address in Ontario.
Ad hoc groups/collectives composed of a majority of Ontario residents
