Natsiq kango
Traditional Seamstress

Elder Natsiq Kango was born in a camp along Frobisher Bay. When Kango was 21, she moved to Arctic Bay and started a successful business, which she ran for over 30 years. She is now based in Iqaluit, where she is an active advocate for education and traditional knowledge.

“I learned tremendously well in Inuit ways, Inuit knowledge, and I learned better Inuktitut vocabulary and understanding different dialects,” she told Nunavut news in Feb 2026. “At this age today, when I think back, I can say I have learned so much, which makes me want to contribute, which makes me want to pass on what I learned.”

She has a long and varied career, having worked as a school counsellor in Arctic Bay and Iqaluit, for Baffinland as a community liaison officer, for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc as secretary/treasurer, for the CBC as an associate producer, and for the Government of Nuanvut as an adoption commissioner Her work in midwivery and traditional Inuit knowledge has seen her travel around Canada and the world as an advocate. Kango is a co-author of the book Birth on the Land – Memories of Inuit Elders and Traditional Midwives.

She is now a Nunavut Teacher Education Program instructor at Nunavut Arctic College.
