John Koensgen

John Koensgen is a Canadian actor, director, and stage combat choreographer known for his multifaceted career in theatre, film, and television spanning more than four decades. He has earned national recognition for his expertise in staging combat sequences, while also maintaining a steady presence as a character actor on both stage and screen.
Koensgen has choreographed fights for well over 100 productions, establishing himself as a leading figure in Canadian stage combat direction. His work with the National Arts Centre includes directing combat for notable theatre pieces such as King Lear, Metamorphoses, The Breathing Hole, and Women of the Fur Trade, as well as operas including Faust, Macbeth, and a concert version of Don Giovanni.
His contributions as an actor and director in the Canadian theatre community include over 100 productions across Canada. For this work, he was recognized with the 2001 Ottawa Critics Circle Award for contribution to English theatre.
On screen, Koensgen has appeared in a range of films and television projects, including a role as a TV anchorman in The Dead Zone (1983), voice work as Tweeg in the animated series The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin (1987), and supporting parts in major features such as The Aviator (2004) and I'm Not There (2007). His later career has featured frequent roles in television movies.
