Weyni Mengesha, Stage Director
Weyni Mengesha is an award winning director who was born in Vancouver to Ethiopian parents. Some recent credits include: Bars and Measures (The Boston Court, USA), Seven Spots on the Sun (Rattlestick Theatre, NY) the Canadian premiere of Father Comes Home from the Wars by Suzan-Lori Parks (Soulpepper theatre), Breath Of Kings (Stratford Shakespeare Festival). Toronto Critics award-winning productions include Lungs and The Small Room at the Top of the Stairs with Tarragon Theatre. Dora Nominated shows include: Kim’s Convenience and A Raisin in the Sun (Soulpepper Theatre), blood.claat (Theatre Passe Muraille), and the acclaimed ’da Kink in My Hair (Theatre Passe Murielle, Mirvish Productions). Her work with Kim’s Convenience was featured as part of “Soulpepper On 42nd St”, NYC, in 2017. Upcoming productions include Treemonisha, a reimagining of Scott Joplin’s rag-time era masterpiece for Volcano Theatre (Canada).
Weyni is also embarking on a television directing path with Dino Dana (Sinking Ship prods) and Kim’s Convenience starting things off for her. She also co-directed a short film (45m), HERO.TRAITOR.PATRIOT as well as a couple of webisodes of L.A.’D
