Moving Words: Intersections of Speech and Motion

This course examines the dynamic relationship between movement and text, exploring how they can deepen, contradict, or amplify one another. Participants will experiment with simple phrases of choreography and spoken language to create integrated or intentionally dissonant systems of expression.

About Your Instructors

Jonathon Young 

In a recent collaboration with Guillaume Côté, Jonathon wrote and directed Don’t Go Home starring Sarah Mearns at New York City Center. With his collaborators at Electric Company Theatre, Jonathon has written and devised over 20 original productions since the company’s inception in 1996. As playwright-in-residence with Kidd Pivot, Jonathon creates alongside choreographer Crystal Pite. Their productions (Assembly Hall, Revisor, Betroffenheit) have toured internationally, winning three Olivier Awards. In 2016, they created The Statement for Nederlands Dans Theatre, which is now included in the repertoire of London’s Royal Ballet.  He is the recipient of the UK National Dance Award.



Guillaume Côté, CQ 

Guillaume Côté, is a renowned former Principal Dancer with The National Ballet of Canada where he also served as Choreographic Associate, with eight of his works in the company’s repertoire. As a guest artist, he has danced with prestigious companies worldwide. He collaborated with director Robert Lepage to create Frame by Frame in 2018. In 2021, he founded his own company, Côté Danse, creating works such as X (Dix), Crypto, Burn Baby, Burn, and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark in collaboration with Ex Machina. Mr. Côté has received numerous awards and was named Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec in 2021.
