"Every migrant knows in his heart of hearts that it is impossible to return, because he himself has been so deeply changed by his emigration. It is equally impossible to return to that historical state in which every village was the centre of the world. The only hope of recreating a centre now is to make it the entire earth." – John Berger
Until We Say Yes is a new dance theatre media project examining love and immigration. The process used to create this show will be experimental, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary. We will seek - through the various media involved - to combine the grace of artifice (actors, singers, dancers, video, animation, sound and scenic design) with the authenticity of real people speaking in their own words (verbatim material, interviews, projection).
We are combining performers with various backgrounds (opera singers, dancers, actors), all of whom are themselves immigrants, or the children of immigrants. We will proceed collaboratively, with responsibility for the final play map falling to the two co-directors.
With this project, we hope to create an elegy to humans in flux, to those who love and lose, and endure. We hope to find, and reveal, the terrible beauty in this, the central and shared phenomenon of our age and place.
