Night In Tunisia

The Story 

Night in Tunisia is a new collaboration between Tunisian dance/theatre maker, Meher Awachri, and Canadian director Ross Manson. The two met at the Fujairah International Festival in The United Arab Emirates. Meher splits his time between Tunis and Berlin, and is one of the most exciting young performance makers from the Arab world. As one of the guest curators for the new international Progress Festival in Toronto, Volcano invited Meher’s show D-Sysiphe (décisif) to the Theatre Centre, where it sold out its run.

Night in Tunisia will offer a glimpse of a society grappling with how to reinvent itself. Taking place over the course of a single night in Tunis, the show will be informed by the iconic Jazz tune by Dizzie Gillespie, the politics of the Arab Spring, and the physical virtuosity of writer/performer Meher Awachri.

Meher Awachri

Meher Debbich Awachri is a professional since 2000 in the arts, he earned a bachelor's degree in 2005 from  high school of arts (theater specialty), national Higher Institute of Dramatic Art (staging and interpretation specialty) in June 2011. At the age of 12 years Meher Awachri began to discover the art and theatrical creation world in the amteur theatre club el Mohammedia, where he grew up .From 1997 to 1999, Meher has played in five different theatrical creations, framed, in this time, by the young students of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art in Tunis ; Jaafer Guesmi and Yahaya Faidi and Nacib Barhoumi, in this time of passion, the talented young actor took the award for best actor Ali Ben Ayed amateur theater festival in 1998. In 2000 Meher had the courage to make his first adaptation and staging " Wings "  based on the " Stranger " by Albert Camus in cooperation with his accompanying creation Haytham Mensi, and just after a year he started his professional career playing in "The devils " by Hedi Abbas and Yahaya Feidi. From 2003 to 2011 Meher played danced and wrote in different theater performances for adults and kids "Lamboula" Furtouna prod, with Saleh il Feleh " letter to my mother, " in" Ferss and manipulator " by Yahya Feidi... After " Wings " in 1999 and "Silence" project his bachelor in 2005, In 2011 meher decided to launch his final project study " D- Sisyphe " into national and international professional market. In 2012 " D- Sisyphus won the first prize in the most famous and most prestigious international monodrama festival in Europe and worldwide "Thespis International Monodrama Festival, Keil , Germany " after his international success he was invited to present his piece in Berlin, Netherlands, UAE, Canada, London, Belarus, Luxembourg, Paris, Japan ...From his first participation in a dance piece with the Famous Tunisian Choreographer Nawel Skandrani in the "The Olive leaf", in 2010 Meher decided to develop his artistic process focus on the physicality expression of the actor, oppressed by two big theme ; first the political issues and their influence on the individual, secondly,  the complexity of intercultural and the the illusion of the identity.
